Korean girl groups are often criticized about too sexy dance steps and suggestive lyrics. But are they being blamed for a dengue outbreak too?
As K-pop girl groups expand their popularity across Asia, it is imminent that they also become fashion icons to fans. The super short hot pants seem to be the garment of choice, a fashion phenomenon that the Thai government is frowning upon.
On Tuesday morning’s episode of MBC News Today, the report says that Thai teenage girls are riding the fad of Korean girl idol fashion, with the hot pants as their favorite item, calling it the “Korean style.” The Thai government however, has ruled against these hot pants, seeing them as threats that expose the girls to dengue fever.
“Teenagers that wear the ‘Korean style’ short pants are more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes,”explains the Thai Deputy Minister of Public Health Anutarasak. “They should wear long pants instead of shorts.”
This statement comes from the fact that as many as 90,000 people have contracted dengue fever this year in Thailand, with 100 deaths. The Thai government is warning against clothes that expose the skin, such as hot pants, so as to prevent acquiring the disease due to mosquitoes.
