‘Sensible Idols’, the new trend

Idols, whom people usually expect to be naive and young, have been surprising the general public with their deep thoughts on civil responsibilities and current social issues – earning themselves the nickname of ‘sensible idols’.
On a recent episode of JTBC‘s ‘Idol Quiz Show Premiere’, Jewelry‘s Yewon was asked to describe the ‘Ahn Chul Soo Syndrome’. Yewon impressed the audience with her articulate answer, “Those people who are tired of the existing government have started desiring people like Ahn Chul Soo, who are highly innovative. This is what we call the ‘Ahn Chul Soo Syndrome’.”
Although she is still young, Yewon was able to consistently express her opinions coherently, shedding the naive and shallow image that often surround idols.
SECRET‘s Sunhwa also guested on the show, and MC Kim Gura asked the singer if there were any current events or issues that have caught her attention. Sunhwa answered that she was concerned about the expensive cost of kindergarten. “Private kindergartens are too expensive for parents so they prefer public education, but the waiting list is long and parents are unable to send their children to school,” she said.
SISTAR‘s Hyorin was also noted for having voiced her own opinion on the price of school tuition previously, while Girls’ Generation‘s Sunny disagreed with her fellow cast members on the issue of desire for cutting-edge technology on ‘Invincible Youth 2′. Sunny disagreed saying that kimchi refrigerators cannot replace Korea’s traditional crocks, and rice is best made in again, a traditional iron pot rather than an electric rice cooker.
Meanwhile, miss A‘s Suzy impressed Entertainer Boom along with the rest of the ‘Invincible Youth 2‘ cast on the December 17th episode with her manners. She showed through her actions that she was just as kind as she was beautiful. Invincible Youth G8 members remarked, “Suzy works just as hard when the cameras are off.”
Even after the cameras were turned off, Suzy thanked the village ladies who helped them make their kimchi, even calling them ‘Mom’, which touched the heart of the staff members. She also gave out massages to the mothers who were tired and exhausted.
T-ARA‘s Hyomin took the time out of her jam-packed schedule to vote at the elections that were held in Seoul in October. Other idols over the age of 20 were also seen casting their votes, serving as a good example for others.
And in celebration of Social Welfare Day, the boys of 2AM visited Infant-Youth facility ‘Good House’ to hand out chicken for the children there. They even held a small concert and signed autographs, creating an unforgettable experience for the children.
There have been many other cases of idols participating in good causes. Some have partnered up with non-profit organizations to raise awareness of various social issues, while some have taken a direct approach by donating money, or taking the time to volunteer.
In some ways, idols are one of the most influential group of people that can impact young adults. If they continue to have positive influence over the young generation, the things they can accomplish and the number of people they can potentially impact are endless.

Who wore it better: Lee Yeon Hee or Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun?

Recently actress Lee Yeon Hee and Girl’s Generation member Seohyun were spotted wearing the same cape jacket.
On the latest episode of JTBC’s ‘Girl’s Generation and the Dangerous Boys‘, Seohyun showed off her cute young charms by wearing a camel colored cape jacket over a casual stripped knit dress.
In contrast, Leo Yeon Hee  wore the same cape jacket in black over a brown turtle neck top with a black wide brimmed hat. Unlike Seohyun’s cute vibe, Lee Yeon Hee gave off a more mature and chic image through this look.
A marketing representative from clothing company Joinus commented, “Lee Yeon Hee and Seohyun are both wearing a black and camel cape jacket that can be paired with a variety of styles [to give off different vibes], so it’s a very popular item this season.”

Did the idol-infested 2011 SBS Gayo Daejun disappoint?

The 2011 SBS Gayo Daejun was an event that verified the great popularity of idol stars. However, a TV Daily report argues that this event was only an idol star party. There wasn’t much of a variety of music genres and it did not show a harmony of seniors and juniors in the music industry.
The 2011 SBS Gayo Daejun was held at the Kintex in Ilsan and was hosted by Girls’ Generation’sYoonALee Seung Gi, and Song Ji Hyo. Popular idol stars including Girls’ Generation, TVXQ, 2PM,Wonder Girlsmiss A2NE1KARAB2ST4minuteT-ARA, Brown Eyed GirlsAfter School, and more appeared on the show.
The most eye-catching aspect of the show were the collaboration stages of the rival girl group members. Brown Eyed Girls’ Ga-In, T-ARA’s Jiyeon, 4minute’s HyunA, and miss A’s Fei gave a special sexy dance performance to Beyonce’s “Run the World”. As the performance was put on by members of differnet groups, it gave the aura of a dance battle. However, maybe it was due to their high rival mindset, their dance skills were high but the performance left a feeling of unsatisfaction.
Overall, the stage was filled with idol groups’ flashy performances. Groups wrapped up the year singing their hit songs of 2011. They also put on many special performances to other songs.
In particular, in the 2nd half of the show, the Queens of K-pop drew much attention with the relay performances by the Wonder Girls, Girls’ Generation, KARA, and 2NE1. It was a self-appraisal of their success overseas, throughout Asia, Europe and the US.
However, the Gayo Daejun stage was solely an idol party. It was hard to find other musicians besides idol stars.  The first half of the show featured a special hip hop stage with Yoon Mi RaeLeessang’sGary, and Dynamic Duo, but it was evident that the performance had been forcefully pushed together.
Many were unsatisfied since active ballad singers of 2011 such as Kim Dong RyulSung Shi Kyung, and Jung Yup were nowhere to be found. Since it was an idol-infested show, the 200 minutes seemed to be filled with similar performances.
Due to the strong dance performances, singers were unable to show off their vocal abilities. About 20 groups gave flashy performances of a similar format making the second half appear to be nothing more than a talent show.
At the same time, KBS held their 2011 KBS Trot Festival, emphasizing the generation split in today’s Korean music industry.
Idol groups have made a large contribution to the Korean music industry through K-pop’s Hallyu effect. Seeing that more than 90% of the stars on the show were idol groups, the only way into the Korean music industry seems to be through idol stardom.
The 2011 SBS Gayo Daejun was the first music festival of this year’s end; however, the remaining music festivals of other broadcasting stations is expected to have a similar nature.
The reporter argues that there needs to be a music festival which has a better incorporation of seniors and juniors in the Korean music industry.
