Jessica reveals her love for Girls' Generation and cold desserts

Girls’ Generation’s Jessica revealed her love for her group through the statement, “Even though I am having a lot of individual schedules, I did not forget about Girls’ Generation.”

In the interview for the July issue of fashion and lifestyle magazine ‘@Star1′, Jessica said that she was “very proud of Girls’ Generation’s solo activities” and that she was wishing them the best from the bottom of her heart. Jessica, who had tried her hand in acting through ‘Wild Romance’ not long ago continued, “Even though we have a lot of individual schedules, we didn’t forget about Girls’ Generation. We still have a lot to do as a nine-member group.”

She also revealed how she will treat summer as a ‘Ice Princess’ as she said, “I like ice cream and red-bean sherbet so much that I even eat them in winter. I guess I will be enjoying them this summer as well. I am actually scared of summer so I am afraid of how I will get over this summer. I think I will have to spend it in a cool place while eating those food.”

On the other hand, Yuri, Jessica, SooYoung and SeoHyun will be showing off their fashion sense in the July edition of ‘@star1′. It is said that Yuri, Jessica, SooYoung and SeoHyun showed off their usual fashion sense in the paparazzi concept photoshoot.

Sooyoung talks about challenges as an actress in @Star1

In the fashion and lifestyle magazine ‘@Star1′ published on June 20th, an interview with Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung was featured where she provided some insights about her transformation in cable channel tvN’s drama ‘The Third Hospital’, which is in its filming stage currently.

In the interview, Sooyoung also discussed and revealed her honest feelings about matters regarding the competition between Yuri, Jessica, YoonA and herself who were involved in dramas recently.

Sooyoung said, “Recently, Yuri and Jessica made their acting debut through dramas. I cheered for them a lot. As this was their first time acting, they did really well and honestly, I was really amazed. As for YoonA, since she has been acting in the past so she has her very own area of specialties. Among the members, there is no pressure or burden due to acting comparison with one another. I think I have my own unique personality as well.”

She added, “Even before I became a singer, I went to a lot of auditions as I have a big dream to be an actress. Not only as a singer, I want to keep challenging myself as an actress too.”

In the paparazzi concept pictorials, Sooyoung, Yuri, Jessica and Seohyun flaunt their unique styling and fashion sense in the July edition of ‘@Star1′ magazine.

Sooyoung not concerned about acting talent comparisons with fellow members

Girls’ Generation‘s Sooyoung is not concerned about being compared to her fellow members Yuri,YoonA, and Jessica when it comes to acting talent.
Sooyoung who is currently filming her new drama ‘Third Hospital‘ sat down for an interview for the July publication of @star1, and revealed her honest thoughts on the friendly competition between herself and her fellow members who successfully concluded their own drama series.
Yuri and Jessica both made their acting debut recently, and I cheered them on a lot,” she said. “They were so good for their first time. I was honestly really surprised.”
YoonA has been acting for a long while, and has established her own territory,” Sooyoung continued. “I’m not too concerned with being compared to the other members. I think as long as I bring forth my own uniqueness, it should be fine.
Before I even became a singer, I had dreams of becoming an actress and I went through a few auditions,” the singer admitted. “I want to continue challenging myself, not only as a singer but also as an actress.

'Marie Claire' Magazine Interviews Jessica and Krystal!

Jessica and her sister, Krystal from f(x), recently took part in a photoshoot and were interviewed for the July issue of “Marie Claire” magazine, in which they discussed their loving relationship.

Girls’ Generation’s Jessica and f(x)’s Krystal being particularly close sisters is a fact that everyone knows. That skinship between family members will decrease is a universal fact for Korean families, but the two pretty sisters leaning against each other’s shoulders, hugging, and kissing each other on the cheeks doesn’t look awkward. It’s an unimaginable thing for me, who would run away when bumping into an oppa I went to middle school with in the hallway, but the two girls’ affection is lovable to the point where it makes me smile like a mother would.

Krystal: I normally don’t have any aegyo, and I have a blunt personality. I’m only like this to my sister. But if I do aegyo, my sister says I’m annoying and shoos me away.
Jessica: I really don’t like it, but she comes trying to give me a kiss, hugging me, and she does this until I accept it. Still, I think expressing feelings between family is good.

If Jessica and Krystal were to fight, who would win?
Krystal: Of course my sister would. Because there is a pretty big age gap, I was controlled by force when we were younger.
Jessica: I lose when it comes to strength now, so I win using skills.

Then if both of you end up liking the same guy, who would yield?
Jessica: That probably wouldn’t happen, but I think the types of guys we like are similar. If we see a guy who dresses well, we’d bicker saying, ‘He’s my style.’ But Soojung-ah (Editor’s note: Krystal’s Korean name is Soojung), I’m the u.n.n.i.e.

Looking at the sisters walk into the studio together, hair wet and smelling of shampoo, it made me wonder what it would be like having a sister. Washing together, wearing each other’s clothes, and then fighting occasionally. I heard that an older sister or younger sister’s presence becomes more apparent when you get older.

Jessica: Because we always played together, I get bored when she’s not around. However, I didn’t really like her when she was first born.
Krystal: Oh, this is the first time I’ve heard about this! Why?
Jessica: Soojung-ah, unnie (Editor’s note: Jessica is referring to herself) didn’t really welcome you at first. I was in preschool at the time, so I remember it all. My mom told me I would be getting a younger sibling. I felt a little anticipation at the time. It also seemed weird, and because I was always the youngest amongst relatives, I didn’t really like the idea of getting a younger sibling. I think I just experienced feelings that anyone else would.
Krystal: Whenever we fought while growing up, mom would always side with you.
Jessica: No, mom would side with you. Always calling you ‘My baby, my baby’.
Krystal: She was on my side when you were around and would be on your side in front of me.

Listening to these ordinary sisters chatting, I keep forgetting that these two girls are Girls’ Generation’s Jessica and f(x)’s Krystal. As you may know, these two are great sisters who are living as members of different idol groups, the heart of the powerful Hallyu, fashion icons, and rookie actresses (their mother must be so proud).

Jessica: Before being casted, the two of us had never thought about becoming singers. Both of us aren’t the types to run towards something we want to do, but rather will start something that comes to us as fate. And if I’m going to start this, I’m going to do it well. That’s my tendency. I didn’t have a dream when I was cast. This “something” started when I didn’t have a dream.

Krystal: While we were walking around the mall, we looked behind us and someone asked us, ‘Where is your mom?’

And like that, the two ended up spending most of their time before their 20′s in SMTOWN. It was probably a difficult time, but fortunately, they remember it as fun, dynamic, and unforgettable days.

Soon, the film “I AM”, which has SMTOWN’s artists as the main characters, will be released.

Jessica: I was surprised. I almost wasn’t aware that it was being filmed, but they had recorded many moments. Memories fade away. It’s a relief there are records.

Along with Jessica and Krystal’s respective groups, Girls’ Generation and f(x), other SMTOWN artists such as Kangta, BoA, TVXQ, Super Junior, and SHINee are shown from their trainee days to when they took the stage at Madison Square Garden in New York as a documentary. With the upcoming release, the poster with every artist as the main character was revealed. Looking at Jessica’s poster, it contains the message, “The seven years spent as a trainee flew by like a panorama.” Also, Krystal’s poster reads, “I like being me.”

If you’re a fan, you probably know already. Jessica and Krystal aren’t simply pretty, sweet, and cheerful girls. Even while talking about sushi or cupcakes, when work begins, they focus to the point where it’s scary, they say what they need to say, and they look straight at your eyes when talking to you. They remind me of the cheerful girls with strong egos in Jane Austen’s novels.

Jessica: Because I’m the type who expresses my opinions honestly, my first impression seems to be taken sharply. I’ve caused misunderstandings a lot, but I don’t try to change myself because of that. Isn’t being honest better than being fake? I just think they’ll get around to understanding my honesty some day.
Krystal: Guys don’t really like me. Guys like girls that are kind and innocent. I used to be innocent (laughs). Now I’m not. Plus, it’s not something I want.

For instance, rather than Jessica and Krystal being “Korea’s little sisters” that everyone loves, I think girls with mysterious and eccentric moods, like Kaya Scodelario, are more appealing. They have started to become people who think of themselves as appealing. On stage and on TV, you didn’t think they are sisters who look alike, but you can’t get rid of the fact that they’re sisters once you see them on stage together.

Krystal: I think little sisters can’t help but look like their older sister.

The similar charm between the two comes from their being carefree. It might even be in their genes.

Jessica: We both had that type of tendency when we were younger. But because I’m active as Girls’ Generation, there are just nine girls. Being among them, there are things that I have to match to a certain extent with them. On the other hand, there are less f(x) members, and because there are foreign members, I think Krystal could remain carefree while promoting.

These girls probably aren’t always Girls’ Generation’s Jessica and f(x)’s Krystal. However, regardless of which path they walk down, there doesn’t seem to be a high possibility for them to become the trouble member. The things these girls have done thus far, any tiring, heart pounding, and unbelievable experiences have created an aura that can be felt from these special sisters.

Jessica: Things have been working out the way I wanted them to. When we debuted, I wanted to become number one, and then I wanted to get the rookie award, and it’s still amazing how each thing actually comes true, one by one. I also thought of it as luck. There are already things I’ve started, such as acting and promoting overseas. The board we are on has become surprisingly larger. I wish I could show all my capabilities and charms, if they even exist. I hope I can keep having fun working and just continue to enjoy it.

Jessica and Krystal have also performed on stage together numerous times. The sisters performed Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” at the SMTOWN concerts in Tokyo and Los Angeles, as well as Katy Perry’s “California Gurls”.

Krystal: Our opinions didn’t even clash when choosing the songs. After deciding on having a joint performance, the thing we both thought of at the same time was that, right?

Since they were little, they went wild over the same musicians, collected CDs together, and eventually worked in the same area of work, so they have lots of things to talk about whenever they meet. Even if they can’t spend a lot of time together as they’re both busy, they always have their own chatroom on “KakaoTalk”, and they talk about anything in it. When will we be able to see the two performing together again?

Jessica: A long time ago, two sisters promoted as singers together as ‘something-something Sisters’, right? Because there aren’t any teams like that nowadays, I think it would be really unique if we were to do it. Plus, I want to show an energy that only comes out when we’re together.

Now, Girls’ Generation members and f(x) members combined creates a much larger number, but the energy shared by real sisters seems to be different. Then again, as the two share countless life experiences, it is obvious that nobody can invade their territory.

Jessica: Not too long ago, we went to where we were born, San Francisco. We went because of work. But still, I made time and ate lunch with Soojung, and because we were in my hometown, it felt nice. After debuting, we haven’t been able to go on vacations together because of the busy schedules. We went on a lot of trips with our mom and dad when we were younger. Since we lived on the West Coast, we vacationed a lot in that area. But we went up north to Canada once, and it was really nice then too.

The two are sisters with a five year age difference. Next year, Krystal finally becomes an adult too. When I asked what the first thing she wanted to do as an adult was, there was a short pause.

Jessica: Krystal doesn’t seem to have much interest in becoming an adult (laughs). Once, my members and Krystal watched an R-rated movie at our dorm. It wasn’t a really a weird movie either. It was ‘American Pie’. But Krystal went crazy, causing a fuss. I guess she thought she was doing something wrong.
Krystal: I think the unnies are really weird!

As a response, Krystal also revealed a secret about her sister. She said that the arrogant and chic Jessica’s room is a princess-y, pink-filled room.

Krystal: My room is absolutely not like my sister’s room!
Jessica: My room has a large mirror, and there is a lot of pink (laughs). On days I have off, I turn music on in my room and don’t get out of bed all day.

When doing photoshoots with other idol groups, I couldn’t help but notice competition between members wanting to look prettier than the member next to me, or wanting to stand in a better place, as they are things any normal person would feel. However, that type of atmosphere was not present on the set with Jessica and Krystal. Even though it was one of those days we were pressed on time, and it being a tiring shoot, Jessica and Krystal kept whispering to each other, laughing, and cheering each other on like that. However, while they are sisters, they are also another idol group’s member and artists under the same company. Have they ever felt competition towards one another?

Krystal: The type of music Girls’ Generation does and the type f(x) does is different. There’s no reason to, and we just don’t feel competition.

The relationship sisters have might be a lot more special than I thought. The reason why I thought about this on this day was because of an answer Jessica gave. I asked when they look the best. I expected the answer to be when they’re on stage, dancing under the spotlight, but the answer I received was quite different.

Jessica: Hm, when she’s sleeping. Because our schedules are different, we don’t see each other often, and so when I get home from work, I look in her room to see if she’s doing well. Sometimes I lay on the bed next to Krystal sleeping before leaving the room [to let her sleep]. She looks the prettiest when she’s comfortable, not thinking or doing anything, because her nerves are probably on edge, and she’s stressed while working.

Her words were correct. It’s more reassuring knowing when your family looks most relaxed over when they look their best. Jessica and Krystal are colleagues that give and receive inspiration from one another as artists, supporters who cheer each other on endlessly, and the closest friends in the entire universe, and I’m jealous of them.

The Flying Girl : Yuri Interviewed in 'Harper's Bazaar' Magazine!

Yuri is featured in the July issue of “Harper’s Bazaar” magazine, and she took part in a photo shoot as well as an interview where she talked about becoming an actress.

Right before the camera flash was about to go off, I told Kwon Yuri that I wanted to shoot “her as an actress”. However, a girl who moved as one amongst nine members on stage, who carried the “acting-idol” label, worried about whether she’d be strong enough to stand alone. Throughout the shoot, she repeated, “I’m not [a] Girls’ Generation [member]. I’m an actress,” like a spell, making me choke up. This lady with peculiar eyes went to and from, being provocative yet dull, to reaching dangerously alluring extremes. But once the camera would stop, she would giggle and return to being a girl. “Photo shoots are one of my favorite schedules. There are times where freckles are visible, or moments where I make awkward, not-so-pretty facial expressions, and that’s fun.” Watching her laugh at her own “embarrassing cut” where her eyes were half open made me think of her as a person who is not afraid of being broken down or failing.

It would not have been an easy decision of going from Girls’ Generation’s “Yuri” to actress “Kwon Yuri” to play a main role from the get-go in the drama, “Fashion King”. Numerous idols have taken their chance at acting, leading to the creation of idol-centered dramas. This meant that Yuri would have to stand on the two-sided criterion. Being a familiar face in an unfamiliar position, the general public’s criticism is a lot sharper and harsher. She’s also at the center of the idol wave and a member of Girls’ Generation, who has been going around the world, so what more would you expect. “I think it would have been easier if I didn’t know anything. Either way, I’m a singer, so I’m used to the stage, how the staff treats me, and cameras. The drama set wasn’t entirely unfamiliar, but it wasn’t necessarily a familiar place either. It was also burdensome because of the expectations people had with Girls’ Generation’s name. It was hard dropping all of that, but that’s actually the right thing to do.” These were probably very difficult first steps for her as she started with ignorance, without any courage or strong experiences. It was probably easier to get the chance to appear in the drama compared to rookie actors, but the barrier that needs to be passed as a real “actress” is a lot higher. “I’ve wanted to act before debuting as a singer. That’s a reason why I chose theater as my major. Because it’s something that I’ve wanted to do for so long, it was like I was missing it more than actually getting to it. I was upset when I couldn’t express things as well as I thought. Due to the nature of the work and because there wasn’t enough time, before I would be able to think about my character, I would have to deal with primary things, like memorizing my lines quickly, and shoot right away. I wasn’t used to that type of environment and things didn’t go how I planned, so I was sad.” Every word, pronounced clearly with her expressions showed just how much she wanted and thought about this work, and the weight of that time could all be felt.

By being active early on with the other Girls’ Generation members, she was always able to experience the enjoyment and helpfulness working with her colleagues. Her communication with the other actors of “Fashion King” played a huge part in her being able to cry and laugh as Choi Anna, even in this unfamiliar atmosphere. Rather than putting forth the instinctive act of trying to stand out among the other actors, she looked for advice from seniors who were both around the same age and younger than herself and would ask questions without any hesitation if she did not know or was not sure of something. “It would have been a lot easier if they were seniors who are a lot older than me, but it was more difficult because we were around the same age. Still, once I approached them first, they helped a lot more enthusiastically. I was curious about whether it was right for me to honestly realize the feelings that I feel, or if I was to act skillfully. When I asked, (Yoo) Ah-in oppa said he feels pleasure in expressing his inner feelings and that it is relieving, you know, like the characters that Ah-in oppa acted all came off as being honest and independent.”

Like Kwon Yuri said, she might not have been able to perfect her script from beginning to end. However, she is a girl that knows what she’s doing right now, what she wants, and, even when wandering, she knows how to take in any confusion and drop it again. “Ha Jungwoo oppa is my school senior. He told me, rather than hoping for advice or thinking of gaining something right away, to just think of it all as the steps of learning. He said that finishing this one drama alone is a great experience and study for me, so to just enjoy that breath. I could really understand what he meant once [the drama] was over.”

Of course, at the beginning, she just wanted to analyze her character. “I tried to dig up her habits and personality in detail. Once I started making up Choi Anna, rather than becoming that person, I kept making things up, speaking in a fake tone, making fake hand gestures and looks, and it made me think of other things. Before expressing sad feelings, I would keep telling myself that I’m sad and hypnotized myself.” After worrying with colleagues and by herself, she ended up starting to find similarities between Choi Anna and herself. While the character of Choi Anna in the drama put her miserable past behind her with a desire to succeed, she was also like other women of this generation who want to do things that they’re assigned and don’t give in, even after being abandoned by love. Not only was she imitating the surface “city girl” image, but she started anew by understanding and sympathizing with the character’s history. “Girls’ Generation’s Yuri has always had a bright, optimistic image, but the person Kwon Yuri actually likes spending time alone and is an ordinary person who has worries and works hard. During my long trainee period, I felt this wasn’t the right path for me and that the day would repeat tomorrow. But if the next day works out, I would think of it as my responsibility and start running towards [my dream] again. Choi Anna is like that, too. Even after being abandoned by love, she gets up the next day, and it’s the same way when failing at work.”

Unlike how singers who “transform” into singers usually continue on with a similar image, her choice was bold and daring. If her trademark was her healthy, frank laughter, it would have been easy for her to take on a bright, cheerful character. So why did she choose a flashy, yet depressed Choi Anna as her first role? “There are probably a lot of reasons, but I wanted to separate Girls’ Generation’s Yuri from actress Kwon Yuri. Rather than showing a character ‘like me’, I guess I wanted to show a different image. I wanted to show a side of me, out of the many others within me, for the first time. My first proposition was ‘I hope they aren’t reminded of ‘Girls’ Generation’.” Either way, during the entire time I watched “Fashion King”, I was not able to see Girls’ Generation’s Yuri anywhere in Choi Anna. From the way she walked putting weight on her toes, her bold, coy expressions and way of speaking, the way she would shake trying not to cry to guard what was left of her pride, and even in scenes where she would swallow sedatives after losing her love, it was difficult imagining the lively, cheerful “Yuri” that is seen on stage. After listening to my words closely, she said she accomplished her primary goal and added this in her unique way of talking as if she is singing, “Still, next time, I hope I can play a role that is a little brighter, smiles well, shows aegyo, and is loved. No questions asked!”

Kwon Yuri is brave. No matter what question I throw at her, she doesn’t distort it. She knows how to reply to sensitive topics brightly and is aware of her good and bad characteristics and doesn’t try to hide it. She showed off her lucid, fresh confidence as is on the set. She would make pleasant jokes and would come to the photographer and suddenly say, “I think we have similar taste!” Her life force is due to her having a healthy body and mind. “A healthy person is prettiest. It’s the reason why I exercise, spend time alone, and go on trips. Your body and mind are all connected, so if your heart is strong, it will naturally be shown on the outside. I think time alone apart from work is something that’s needed. On days I have off, I just play. I do yoga, swim, and have started to learn martial arts recently. Horseback riding, boxing, kickboxing, and fencing, I do it all (laughs).” With all the things she does, I think we might be able to see Kwon Yuri being active in many more different genres.

Separating life and work accurately, and going to and from both things flexibly, her healthy lifetsyle is shown through her face. Once all that time is gathered, the distinct characteristics create the person’s face, way of speaking, and gestures, and that person’s life and philosophy become apparent. “When I look at an actor or singer I like, they don’t just have pretty faces. The traces of life that come from a person were what made them beautiful. From their general atmosphere to their choice of words and every minor thing, just that ‘person’ [is beautiful].” It seemed she was stacking each of those things and making them ripen. “Before I say what kind of actress I want to become, I want to become a person that is frank and pure with a healthy energy, a person with an unpredictable charm who acts accordingly regardless of what clothes I’m put in. If I become that type of person, naturally I should be able to become that kind of actress, right?” Some might compare idols to dolls, but Kwon Yuri is not the case. I imagined an energetic, innocent 24-year old girl, but at this moment, she is a woman who is serious about acting and is working hard to unravel this task at hand. She won’t get nervous. She will leisurely complete her dream, and we will be lucky to have gained another actress named Kwon Yuri.
