According to Japan’s Oricon on January 16th, Girls’ Generation’s 1st Japanese album ‘Girls’ Generation’ which was released on June 1st, 2011 had secured the 5th spot on Oricon Weekly Album Chart with sales of 16,000 copies (total accumulative sales including repackaged album: 780,000 copies) for the week ending January 23rd.
‘Girls’ Generation’ has been placed within the top 10 for 17 weeks so far, which is the most number of weeks within the top 10 that an album by a Korean artist has ever achieved in history.
The previous record was held by the original soundtrack (OST) for ‘Winter Sonata’ which was released in September 2003. The OST managed to stay within the top 10 for 16 weeks with accumulative sales of 910,000 copies.
‘Girls’ Generation’ also holds the record of the highest number of copies sold within the first week among foreign artists with 232,000 copies (no.1 on Oricon Album Weekly Chart). As of last year, the album recorded a total sales of 642,000 copies which was the 5th highest selling album in Japan.
