Welcome to ‘The Mixtape‘, a special bi-weekly feature that brings you the best K-pop playlists! We’ll be sharing songs that we think you guys should really check out, and possibly introduce you to some great tracks that you might not have heard before – all of which surrounds a special theme.
Our first issue introduced the Top 10 songs for a ‘hot summer‘, and the response was so explosive that we’ve decided to put up ‘Part II’! We’ve listened to your suggestions, and provided another 10 songs that really fit a ‘hot summer’.
Check ‘em out below!
☼ MBLAQ – “Mona Lisa“ ☼
Summertime usually means that pop songs get that Spanish twist to channel the sultry heat of Spain. For their latest hit, “Mona Lisa”, MBLAQ threw in a melody infused with a flamenco flavor, and they also made their hottest image transformation to date. We couldn’t think of a better song than this to kick off the second edition of a ‘hot summer’ playlist!
☼ Mighty Mouth feat. Soya – “Fiesta” ☼
Speaking of Spanish flavor, Mighty Mouth and Soya teamed up to bring you one of the best summer tracks so far this year. Titled “Fiesta”, this song makes you want to hit up a beach party with your friends and if you’re crazy enough, to do the conga. BUT NO SHAME! Anything goes in a fiesta!
☼ Cool – “Woman of the Sea” ☼
While we’re at the beach, we might as well introduce to you the greatest ’seaside’ hit of all-time. For those of you who aren’t very familiar with this group, Cool were considered to be the best remedy to summer’s brutal heatwaves. They’d drop an album chock-full of tracks that would play in every bar, club, or chilling spot, reviving everyone from the humidity and heat. While their influence has waned over the years, their ‘cool’ legacy still lives on with their ultimate summer classics.
☼ Park Myung Soo & SNSD’s Jessica – “Naengmyun” ☼
In our last edition, we introduced ‘Kimbap‘ to represent summer because of all the nostalgia it holds for us. But we totally forgot about ‘Naengmyun‘! Naengmyun is a noodle dish immersed in a cold soup that’s a staple in many Korean households during the summer. Just like how the actual dish is refreshing, Jessica’s sweet vocals deliver that same effect in this cute duet with Park Myung Soo.
☼ HyunA – “Bubble Pop!” ☼
For guys, no summer is complete without spotting a cute girls in shorts. In fact, it’s practically the signal to the start of the summer season when girls put away their parkas and emerge in hot outfits that make guys double back and say ‘Daaaang!‘. HyunA’s “Bubble Pop” definitely drives that point home, and although it got blocked from TV for being a little too sexy, it undoubtedly proves that her music video is one of the hottest Korea’s seen this season.
☼ 1TYM - “Hot Hot” ☼
“Hot Ddeuguh” (translated literally as “Hot Hot”) was blasting from every speaker in Korea back in the day because it carried a certain swag in its beat that made guys feel like they were smooth players. It had its effect on the ladies too, who (and I kid you not, I’ve seen this happen) would suddenly switch up the style of their walk into a sexy strut down the street.
☼ – After School Red - “Into the Night Sky” ☼
One of the great things about summer is having the time to go on those night-time joy rides. The car is personally my favorite place to listen to music because I can just clear my mind of stress and pressure built up from daily annoyances. Here, After School Red sings about a letting go from a break-up on a laid-back, mellow dance beat, which is perfect for those therapeutic night-time drives.
☼ Nell – “Moonlight Punch Romance” ☼
Nell is definitely one of the most talented artists out there in the music industry. People who enjoy good music always pick Nell as one of their favorites when they discuss artists, and it’s only natural, considering how they’re Seo Taiji’s proteges. This track is actually one of the less popular ones from his album, “Separation Anxiety”, but the intro guitar line hits the right spot for me every time.
☼ Shinhwa - “Eussya Eussya (Let’s Go!)” ☼
As you guys have Super Junior, TVXQ, and Big Bang these days, I (along with the other 80s-90s babies) had Shinhwa and g.o.d. War would break out when the respective fans met at concerts, and although I didn’t follow either of them passionately, my sister was a die-hard Shinhwa fan. But anyways, this song by Shinhwa is one of my all-time favorite summer jams. I still sing it when I go to karaoke!
☼ DJ DOC - “Summer Story” ☼
DJ DOC’s summer story was the track that brought a new light to their career. It showcased a more playful side, and became an instant classic. It even had a winter version made after its success, so this song is a track you guys can’t miss out on. Despite its uplifting pop beat, this song’s actually about a failed summer romance.
Well, since it’s summer, let’s forget about all our troubles and just keep dancing!
Stay tuned for more playlists from “The Mixtape”!
