Seohyun finally meets Yonghwa’s mother on “We Got Married”

CNBLUE’s Yonghwa and SNSD’s Seohyun finally visited Yonghwa’s hometown of Busan on the latest episode of MBC’s “We Got Married.”

As reported earlier, Seohyun finally got to meet Yonghwa’s mother in person during the couple’s trip.

Meeting her at a sashimi restaurant, the three engaged in conversation and viewers were quick to notice the respectful manners Seohyun was displaying before her mother-in-law. She showed a bigger appetite than normal (since that’s what mother-in-laws love to see in a daughter-in-law) and by opening her mouth wider than normal for each bite, she made sure to eat without being picky as well.

When Seohyun briefly left for the restroom, Yonghwa began asking his mother about her thoughts on his new wife.

She replied with a content smile, “She’s not like kids these days, as she’s very nice and respectful. I like her a lot, I think she’ll treat you well. It’s important how well your personalities match, though.”

She even suggested that Yonghwa feed her one of the dishes himself upon Seohyun’s return, and the two pulled off the ‘act of affection’ in front of her despite much embarrassment.

After seeing Yonghwa feed her another bite, she commented, “Daughter-in-law, you’re making me jealous! You remind me of the movie ‘Trap.’ It’s a movie about a mother-in-law killing her daughter-in-law out of jealousy. They fight in the end,” putting Seohyun in a state of shock.

In an effort to help Seohyun feel less nervous, she began telling her stories of Yonghwa’s past. She started, “I saw Yonghwa writing letters on the show and was very surprised. Ever since he was little all the way up until he graduated high school, he wrote the same thing in his letters to his parents.”

She continued, “They were always, ‘Parents, thank you for giving birth to me. I’ll grow up into a man you’ll be proud of. Please live a long and healthy life.’

Yonghwa clarified, “I’m not used to writing stuff like that,” while his mother retorted, “But you write so many letters to Seohyun.”

When asked for any advice from Seohyun, Yonghwa’s mother replied, “There’s nothing you have to fix. Everyone grew up in a different setting, and all you need to do is think preciously of Yonghwa. You’re doing great.

Seohyun also prepared an abundance of presents for Yonghwa’s mother, such as sweet potatoes and health products she bought from her visit to Japan, along with a thoughtful handwritten letter.

SNSD mentioned in the “Wall Street Journal”

SNSD fans were buzzing over how their favorite idols were highlighted in the prestigious news outlet, the Wall Street Journal. The girl group was recognized for their savvy usage of YouTube as a way to advance into the Japanese market.

On January 14th, the journal reported SNSD uploaded videos of their Japanese songs on YouTube and spread the videos on various websites, providing a larger audience for the group. Music fans that noticed the videos immediately began requesting for the songs on radio programs, and created a ‘buzz’ about SNSD online. Studying the effects, the journal attributes SNSD’s Japanese success to the global accessibility of YouTube.

CEO Kim Young Min commented, “Ever since we’ve partnered with YouTube, we’ve managed to cut back hundreds of thousands in server expenses. YouTube allows us to promote our artists to fans all across the globe.”

When asked about how much they made through the ads placed on their channel, he replied, “It’s not much, but it’s enough for us to gain interest in partnering with Google and YouTube.”

Wall Street Journal explained how YouTube helped SNSD in Japanese promo

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published an online article entitled ‘YouTube Helps South Korean Band Branch Out’ which basically discussed about how SM Entertainment utilized YouTube as a tool to introduce SNSD to the Japanese market.

According to WSJ on January 14th, there are 2 reasons behind the success of SNSD’s 1st showcase in Japan at Ariake Coliseum,Tokyo. The first reason being the debut song itself which is a Japanese language song and secondly, some online assistance from YouTube in spreading the words to the public.

According to the article, SM Entertainment uploaded the MV of the Japanese-language song (‘Genie’ Japanese version) to YouTube weeks ahead of the showcase and it was their strategy to allow fans to reupload the videos on any websites, subsequently driving Japanese fans to flood radio stations with song requests as well as online discussions on forum sites.

*Mistake by WSJ – ‘Genie’ Japanese version PV was released on YouTube on August 26th, 2010, a day after the Ariake Coliseum showcase and not weeks ahead.

SM Entertainment has been releasing the videos of its artists through Google Inc.’s YouTube since last year. YouTube uses an anti-piracy scheme known as ‘Content ID’ which provides protection against duplicates of copyrighted videos.

According to SM Entertainment’s CEO, Kim Youngmin, the partnership with YouTube is mainly for promotional purposes and through it, the agency saved thousands of dollars a month to maintain video servers on various websites. He added, “Rather than being on each video delivery site in each country, it’s much better for us to be on a world-wide channel like YouTube”.
